YOUTH-BASED party Muda has decided to sit out the upcoming Mahkota by-election in Johor.

Johor Muda said in a statement that it would instead focus on strengthening its grassroots support in the state.

It added that the decision to not contest was made following a discussion with its national leadership.

“For now, we would like to focus on our tour across all districts in Johor as part of our efforts to strengthen party grassroots and rejuvenate the party as we aim to expand our presence across the state.

“We will also serve as a check and balance in championing local issues, which includes giving voice to the locals through Muar MP and Puteri Wangsa assemblyman,” it stated.

The two elected representatives mentioned are Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman and Amira Aisya Abd Aziz.

The Mahkota state seat by-election is on September 28. Nomination and early voting dates are September 14 and 24 respectively.

The by-election was called following the death of incumbent assemblyman Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, 63, on August 2.

Kluang Umno Youth chief Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah was named the candidate for the government while Perikatan Nasional chose semi-pro football player Mohd Haizan Jaafar for the polls. – September 12, 2024.
